About the artist Born at Montreal, Quebec, Lois Morris studied live model drawing at the Montreal Art Gallery under Arthur Lismer, and oil painting , charcoal and pastels under Elaine Johnson during the 1940s and 1950s. Then, while living in Ontario she studied fine art floral ceramics and china painting in Woodbridge, under the tutiledge of Mercedes. In 1963, living in Toronto, she took up rug hooking while attending an adult education class given by Jean Field, a teacher with Rittermere Craft Studio, formerly of Niagara, Ontario. Lois began teaching the craft from her home in Toronto as a teacher with Rittermere Craft studio in l967, then, back in Montreal in 1973 began teaching Rug Hooking at home and 5 classes a week at Centennial Hall, Beaconsfield. Shortly thereafter, she formed the Beaconsfield Rug Hooking Guild. She has been involved with rug hooking shows yearly and bi-yearly ever since. Prior to her husband’s retirement, the family was transferred to Ottawa, Ont. where she became involved with the Old Forge group of hookers to share her knowledge and expertise. She also taught adult hooking classes at Riverdale High School while there. Even so occupied, she found time to travel to Beaconsfield on Mondays to continue her work there. She has participated in many Ontario Hooking Craft Guild (OHCG) shows across Ontario and co-convened the 1984 show in Ottawa. She was the guest speaker at the 1986 OHCG exposition in Toronto, speaking on the topic "portraits" , following which she wrote an article for Rug Hooker News ans Views. Lois taught her craft to summer classes at Trent University School of Rug Hooking for four years as an invited lecturer. As a gifted artist in her craft, she has been the grateful recipient of several awards and prizes. |
